– For ultralight fishing, use 1 – 6 lb. diameter line.
Berkley argues that their newest series of fishing lines, NanoFil is the thinnest and strongest line to ever be produced. This is a huge blessing for ultralight anglers because it is designed specifically to get more line onto the reel and still maintain superior casting distance, casting accuracy, and super-sensitivity that is unheard of in other types of lines, whether fluorocarbon, monofilament, braided or fused. The line is built using Dyneema fibers in a single filament design rather than fused or braided like other lines. The light lines have been tested at a lower lb test rating than they actually are, which means that you will get superior line tensile and knot strength even though you’re only using 2lb or 4lb test lines. The 2lb and 4lb test lines have been tested to break well over 10lbs in some cases but still retain the small diameter that you expect from a 2lb or 4lb test line.
What I Think
Berkley’s NanoFil is going to change the ultralight game forever. You are going to have to learn how to tie a NanoFil knot, which is basically a Palomar knot with an extra turn in it, in order to overcome the lines slippery texture and super-small diameter. If you are looking for a line with almost zero stretch, the sensitivity and strength of braid, but prefer your lines to disappear and keep a small diameter than you are going to want to give Berkley’s NanoFil a chance on your ultralight spinning reels.
